An excellent article about a lovely film of acceptance, allyship and long-term friendship. Great to see it on the RTE website, sometimes not the most supportive of media outlets for trans! https://lnkd.in/eqNNqNwC

I am thrilled to share that my critical analysis of Spartacus (1960) and Cleopatra (1963) has been published! In this essay, I examine how both films reflect the gritty and glamorous mindsets of 1960s America. Spartacus depicts the struggle and resilience of slaves, mirroring the oppression of communists. Meanwhile, as women became more politically active and sexually liberated, Cleopatra too follows, presenting a strong, assertive female protagonist, illustrating shifting gender roles in society.Read it and let me know what you think about it! https://lnkd.in/g44kUKUt

Feelgood Friday – Since when did “like a girl” become an insult? A few years ago there was an advert by Always called Like a Girl. The advert gets you thinking about how the phrase "like a girl" has become an insult. And this little video provides a challenge to that. As a result it creates a really uplifting message, especially to girls and young women. Is there language that you used to use, that you don’t use any more? Because you’ve thought about it, the impact it has on someone? If so, good. Every day is a learning day and we can all do better. Making the world better one phrase at a time. Enjoy watching and happy Feelgood Friday everyone. #DiversityandInclusion #Inclusion #Leadership #GlobalAndInclusivehttps://lnkd.in/eGyjzKMy

What if male CEOs were asked the same questions as female CEOs? The questions in this video are based on real situations. They point out the unequal treatment of women in positions of economic power. It also calls for a harmonization of issues and equal treatment in order to work towards a true equality of opportunity. It's international Women's Day 2024. Let's make a difference.

This conversation between Conan I'Brien and Jon Stewart sheds such gentle light on a problematic pattern across media industries, where its practitioners - film and tv makers, reporters and editors, musicians, game developers, ad creatives, content creators - invest their 'whole selves' into the work while what is used to benchmark and assess their work rests on flimsy, meaningless, (statistically) unreliable and insignificant metrics. Sooner or later this leads to deep disenchantment and indeed, as O'Brien and Stewart claim, this may contribute why media work is a young persons field of work. However, it is exactly these young professionals (and among them a majority of women, LGBTQ+ and people with minority backgrounds) that are leaving the industry in droves (in what is called the 'turnstile effect'). All of this speaks to the exploitative, manipulative and fundamentally unprofessional way of evaluating 'good work' in all media - and it leads to people burning out and getting sick on the job.

So brave! 😭 Here is an absolutely beautiful story about #courage #authenticity #friendship and fighting some of the hardest enemies #loneliness & #depressionPlease watch, share, and enjoy this heartwarming story so we can create #awareness and #empathy towards this brave and suffering group! 🏳️🌈 (Please LinkedIn add the trans flag emoji) The LGBTQ community in the United States has experienced significant developments over the past decades. As of 2023, 7.6% of U.S. adults identified as LGBT, more than double the percentage in 2012 [1]. This increase correlates with growing societal acceptance, particularly among younger generations, with 22.3% of Generation Z identifying as LGBT in 2023 [1]. Despite progress, discrimination remains a pressing issue. In 2023, there were 86 anti-LGBTQ hate groups recorded in the U.S. and 1,026 victims of anti-lesbian hate crimes [1]. #Transgender individuals face particular challenges, with 37% of transgender youth aged 13-17 living in states that restrict their participation in school sports consistent with their gender identity as of March 2024 [2]. Mental health is a critical concern, especially for LGBTQ youth. In 2023, almost half of transgender and non-binary youth considered #suicide [1]. Access to affirming healthcare varies by state, with 45% of the U.S. LGBT population living in states with transgender exclusions in health insurance coverage as of 2024 [3]. Politically, there have been both advancements and setbacks. While same-sex marriage was legalized federally in 2015, 31% of Americans in 2022 stated they would like to see it outlawed [1]. State-level policies vary widely, with California scoring highest (42.5) and Tennessee lowest (-14) on LGBTQ+ equality measures in 2024 [4].My humble conclusion: This is a delicate and ever-changing situation that we must educate ourselves on to provide hope and support. Will we ever break free from gender stereo-types if it is so engrained in young children today? The video is very telling and worth watching. #genderequality #womeninbusiness #womenempowerment #womeninstem #womeninleadership

For the first time in many years, I'm not giving an #iwd speech at a breakfast or lunch adorned with pink balloons, pretty cupcakes, and lots of flowers. That's not a bad thing - I don't miss the performative pink and there are many other far more diverse and deserving women who should be spotlighted on stages this International Women's Day. In recent years when I've been a speaker for IWD, I've tried to demonstrate how #genderbias exists by "flipping the script" -- showing some of the ways we speak about women and how ridiculous it sounds when we say the same things about men. A great resource for laughing about this, and for maintaining some sanity as a woman in a man's world, is the social media account @manwhohasitall (see links below). In the same spirit, this video by In Her Chair is a great way of demonstrating through humour the #unconsciousbias women face at work. In this video, ten male Swiss CEOs answer questions that are usually only asked of women: https://lnkd.in/gkb_h2Vz And the kicker is these questions, and many more far worse, really do get asked! In my executive coaching work with women leaders in human rights, humanitarianism and development, I've heard so many stories like these of the ridiculous questions that women get asked in interviews, and the overt and subtle discrimination they face in the workplace. The problem is, these days it's unconscious bias that is often showing through, not deliberately outrageous statements. That's why it's so useful to flip the script as a way of seeing that these things, while often innocuous on the surface, are indeed discriminatory -- because if we wouldn't say it to men, we shouldn't say it to women. If you want some light relief, and some ideas about how to #flipthescript , check out Man Who Has It All:FB: https://lnkd.in/giG9TrgwInsta: https://lnkd.in/gWG7jfN5X: https://lnkd.in/gTEYrEM7and soon in print form: https://lnkd.in/gBR9C7h3 #flippingpatriarchy #genderequality #genderinequality #iwd2024

Misogyny & Misandry. Are these words gender specific words of a neutral term 'sexism' or something more filled with hate? For some reason, when googling Misogyny, it implies hatred as a leading descriptor for the word which isn't evident in the opposite term Misandry.Misogynist, a person with hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against women or girls.Misandrist, a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against men.Sexism is characterised by or showing prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, on the basis of sex.I am constantly seeing references to Misogyny being a contributing or main factor for gender specific violence against women.I find this to be misleading or inadequate if the word does contain the 'hatred' suggested in many definitions on Google. If however, it is indeed, just a gender specific word for sexist, then I find it could be an adequate use of the term.I note the words popularity came after Julia Gillard famous speak, where the words Misogyny and sexism were not used interchangeable but in tantum.(Julia was amazing in this speak, wonder why she didn't survive?)I don't know many communication experts but perhaps William David may be able to provide some context to the correct use of these terms?Any other insights? Thanks Mark H. for inspiration this ponder. Respectful conversations and open communications often lead to greater clarity, understanding and better outcomes for all.https://lnkd.in/gVKE962A
